Alianca di Navegacao has put into service the 3,820 teu AMERICO VESPUCIO, a gearless SDARI 3800 type from CSSC’s Shanghai Shipyard. The vessel is 234.00m long, 37.20m wide and offers provisions to supply 500 reefer containers. Like her sisters, the AMERICO VESPUCIO is propelled by a 7-cylinder MAN B&W engine rated at 22,900 kW for a speed of about 20 knots. The ship is the last of four SDARI 3800 sisters for Alianca.
The ship’s actual delivery date is somewhat unclear, since all four vessels appear to have spent several weeks or even months at the outfitting pier of their builders. While de-facto idle, the AMERICO VESPUCIO and her sisters might have technically been counted as still ‘under construction’.
Well over a month ago, the ship eventually left Shanghai for a positioning trip to Brazil and it is scheduled to phase into her owners’ intra-Brazil cabotage service this week. Here, the vessel will join its earlier sisters SEBASTIAO CABOTO, PEDRO ALVARES CABRAL and FERNAO DE MAGALHAES.
The new ship is named after the Italian explorer, navigator and cartographer Amerigo Vespucci (1454 – 1512) who first demonstrated that Brazil and the West Indies did not represent Asia’s eastern outskirts as initially conjectured from Columbus’ voyages, but instead constituted an entirely separate landmass hitherto unknown to Europeans.
