Singapore-based Soong Fong Shipping has taken delivery of the first of two 1,736 teu ‘GW 1700 Mk-II’ type vessels, which the company ordered in May 2011 at Guangzhou Wenchong Shipyard in China.
The vessel is to be delivered under the charter name MOL HORIZON and she will join Mitsui OSK Lines’ (MOL’s) intra-Asia network this week.
The new ship will begin her active career on Bien Dong Shipping’s and MOL’s Hong Kong to Haiphong shuttle ‘VH3’. At this occasion MOL will take control of this one-ship loop and replace Bien Dong as the service operator. The MOL HORIZON will however only be an extra loader on the ‘VH3’ as part of her positioning trip to Thailand.
At Laem Chabang, the MOL HORIZON will phase into the Thailand – Straits -India loop offered jointly by MOL and Regional Container Lines. On this loop, the new ship will replace the 1,388 teu MERIAN.
Soon Fong’s second ‘GW 1700 Mk-II’ type vessel was originally scheduled for delivery in late 2013, but has been deferred to March 2014.
