The Hamburg-based non-operating owner Leonhardt und Blumberg confirmed that the fire onboard its container vessel HANSA BRANDENBURG has been extinguished and that the ship is currently being towed towards Mauritius.
The 1,740 teu vessel had to be abandoned by its crew last week after parts of the container load caught fire at sea. At the time of the accident, the ship was on charter to PIL, steaming accross the Indian Ocean on a voyage from Singapore to Durban on the ‘SW3’ Far East to South Africa and West Africa service.
A final decision on the port of refuge yet has to be made. Upon arrival off Maritius, a further assessment of damage to the vessel is planned.
