Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) today said it had won an order for three large containerships worth KRW 481.20 million (USD 422 million).
In its disclosure notice to the Korea Stock Exchange, the South Korean shipyard said the vessels will be delivered to an unnamed Asian owner by 31 July, 2015.
DSME’s statement did not indicate the size of the three new ships, but the price of USD 140.66 million per unit points at ultra-large container ships of +18,000 teu. In May, the Chinese carrier CSCL had ordered five 18,400 teu ships at Hyundai Heavy Industries for USD 136.60 million. A month later, the UAE-based UASC signed a memorandum of understanding to order up to six ships of similar size at the same yard. The two carriers plan to deploy the vessels together on a joint jumbo service between the Far East and Europe. Further details about the three-ship order at DSME are expected to be available soon.
