With immediate effect, the Dubai-based container line Simatech will add a second vessel to its Mogadishu feeder linking the Somalia port to the Middle East Gulf hub of Jebel Ali.
This addition is made in response to customer demand, says the feeder specialist who opened the Mogadishu service in January this year, and it will bring the frequency to one call every ten days, with the 1,221 teu SIMA PRIDE running alongside the 1,684 teu ANIA.
Simatech remains so far the only liner operator covering Somalia. The shipping line appears to firmly believe in the viability of its route to Somalia: Through several joint-ventures with local companies, Simatech is involved in port operations and agency services in Mogadishu.
Future plans of Simatech at Mogadishu include a USD 70 million container port expansion to be initiated on the approval of Somali Government. Simatech also plans to set up a merchant marine academy in Mogadishu to train local youth as skilled seafarers through qualified trainers from abroad.
