The South Korean shipyard Daewoo Shipbuilding and Marine Engineering (DSME) disclosed on Friday that it received orders to build four container vessels from an unnamed African company. DSME revealed neither any vessel specifications nor the identity of the ship owner, but stated that the ships will be delivered by March 2015.
According to a regulatory filing, the unnamed client is spending KRW 378.20 billion for the ships, the equivalent of around USD 336 million. Compared to other recent orders, the price tag of USD 84 million per vessel suggests that the ships will be in the size range of about 9,300 teu. This would match the recent trend towards versatile compact wide-beam ships of 300m x 48.20m, which appear to develop into a new ‘standard’ class of container vessel.
