Maersk Line and Safmarine have thinned out their ‘WAF5+’ loop, which links the Gibraltar Strait hubs of Algeciras (Spain) and Tanger Med (Morocco) with the ports of Luanda, Lobito and Namibe.
A week ago, the service has been downgraded from weekly departures to fortnightly sailings. It is now maintained with a fleet of three vessels in the size range of some 1,700 teu.
The ‘WAF5+’ is one of currently ten active liner services with which Maersk Line and Safmarine connect their western Med hubs with numerous ports in West Africa. Given the seasonal nature of some of the typical cargoes in the trade, the fluctuation in cargo volumes and the varying (and often long) waiting times at some West African ports, the services are subject to frequent modification.
